According to the World Health Organization, neuropsychiatric disorders affect one out of four individuals, with tremendous personal and societal impact. Two coordinated special issues in Trends in Cognitive Sciences and Trends in Neurosciences highlight recent advances as well as challenges in research on neuropsychiatric disorders and their treatment. TiCS Special Issue:   Cognition in Neuropsychiatric Disorders

Volume 16, Issue 1 | January 2012

One in four individuals will suffer from a mental disorder at some point in their lives and the burden of mental illness both on the individual and on society is enormous. Advances in understanding the psychological and neural bases of cognitive and emotional disturbances that are characteristic of neuropsychiatric disorders hold significant promise for the eventual development of effective treatments. The articles in this special issue address the mechanisms and neural basis of cognitive and emotional impairments in a broad range of disorders, evaluate existing treatments for specific disorders, and highlight novel approaches to understanding mental illness. This issue also sees the launch of a number of new formats in the journal: TrendsTalk, Spotlight and Forum articles, which, along with other established short formats, such as Science & Society articles, provide a broader perspective and outlook of the field.

TiNS Special Issue:   Neuropsychiatric Disorders

Volume 35, Issue 1 | January, 2012

In the coordinated TiNS special issue, you can find a broad selection of opinion and review articles that cover basic neuroscience aspects of neuropsychiatric research, as well as discussions of research not touched upon in the TiCS issue (such as the neural circuitry implicated in posttraumatic stress disorder, the neurobiology of anhedonia, and the origins of suicidal behavior).
